Dr. Mohamed Elduma is a distinguished public health leader with over two decades of expertise spanning clinical medicine, public health and strategic health leadership. He currently serves as the Head of the Health Unit at the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Secretariat, where he spearheads the formulation and implementation of regional health strategies and policies. In this role, he provides visionary leadership to advance IGAD’s health agenda, ensuring alignment with continental and global frameworks while addressing the unique health challenges of the Horn of Africa and East Africa. Dr. Elduma oversees the coordination of regional health programs and specialized centers of excellence, fostering collaboration among member states to strengthen health systems, enhance resilience, and promote equitable access to quality healthcare. His leadership is instrumental in driving innovation, building partnerships, and mobilizing resources to respond to emerging health priorities, including public health emergencies, disease prevention, and universal health coverage. Prior to joining IGAD, Dr. Elduma contributed extensively to national health policy and program development at the Ministry of Health in Sudan. He is a medical doctor with advanced specialization in public health, holding academic credentials from the University of Khartoum (Sudan), the Royal Tropical Institute (Netherlands), and Harvard University (USA). Complementing his academic foundation, he has completed professional training in intervention mapping, organizational development, and leadership—equipping him with the expertise to lead transformative health initiatives across the region.
