Stuart Gietel-Basten is a Professor of Social Science and Public Policy at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where he also serves as the Associate Director of the Center for Aging Science. His work is centred on the practical challenges and opportunities created by population change. For many years, Stuart has focused his research and writing on two key areas: low fertility and population ageing. He explores the causes and consequences of these trends, particularly in Asia and Europe, and works to connect academic research with real-world policy. His goal is to help governments and organisations better understand how demographic shifts affect everything from family life and healthcare to pensions and the economy. He has written extensively on these topics, including books and articles for both academic and policy audiences. Based in Hong Kong, Stuart's work aims to provide clear, evidence-based insights into how we can navigate the challenges of ageing societies and changing family patterns.
